Sample Answer 1:
A gap year is a year after high school when a student takes time to explore his or her
interests, which usually entails some type of travelling or working. After the gap year is over,
the student begins his or her career. It has both pros and cons which I shall discuss in this
There are many benefits of taking a year off. Firstly, the student can explore his interests
before deciding on a major. Just passing out of secondary school, a student does know what
his real interests are. A gap year gives him time to introspect and he may also find
something he has never considered studying before. Secondly, he can save money to
finance his education and ease some burden off his parents’ shoulders. Higher education is
very expensive and some parents cannot afford the full cost of students’ university fees.
Furthermore, during this year, the student meets different people and experiences different
cultures. As a result his personality develops and he comes to know about the outside
world. Finally, a well planned gap year is attractive to some admissions tutors and to future
employers. For example, a student can add his activities of the gap year in his resume when
he applies to the university or for some job after completion of his education. This is taken
in a positive light by the admissions committee and some job providers.
As every garden has weeds, similarly a gap year also has a downside. A student may find it
difficult to get back to study. A year is a long time and once that tempo of attending classes
and doing home-work etc. is lost, a student may not feel like studying again. Secondly, if he
starts earning enough, education may seem unimportant. Finally, if a student doesn’t plan it
properly, it may end up as a wasted year.
To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that a gap year has a lot of advantages provided it
is planned well.
Model Answer 2:
It is true that some school leavers prefer to go travelling or gaining some working experience first before consider going to University to obtain a degree as there are more benefit that they can get by working first. While I agree with the statement, I believe that going university first would be essential in order to prepare them in a tight competition of surviving in the modern era.
Generally, many school leavers would leave school because they do not enjoy academic study. Some has chosen to travel. In this way, they are able to go to new places, meet a lot of people and hence learn about other culture. it is by travelling that they will learn how to survive in a certain place and learn the skill to communicate with other people. Perhaps by travelling and finding new thing that they will then discover what they want to do later in life. Apart from travelling, working for a period of time will also give school leavers the experience of working which is mostly needed in applying for a professional job. Additionally, if one’s has a working experience, they may have no difficulty in adapting in real working life compare to those who do not have working experience at all.
However, there may be disadvantages if school leavers do not consider going university first. It is undeniable that most of job requirement now needed a university qualification so, therefore their chance of getting better job would be lesser. Apart from that, if school leaver would work without further education, it will restrict their movement and understanding about the job that they undertake. For instant, if someone working as a carer without understanding of diseases or medication, then they will only able to look after the ADLs (Activity of Daily Livings) and will not understand if the person that they look after will fall sick. Next, one’s may feel comfortable working, earning money and building their career life that they may forget about studying in university. In addition, if they wish to go university after a period of working and travelling, they may have difficulty in adjusting to university’s assignment and projects.
For the reasons mentioned above, it is not a mandatory that school leavers to go straight to university in a promise of a better job. It is by travelling and gaining working experience that they can discover their interest and career path which hence help them to firmly decide on a proper course to enroll for further study.
Model Answer 3:
Nowadays, an increasing number of students determine to seek a job or take a trip for a period of time after graduation from the senior high school. Yet, there remain some arguments as to whether the overall effect of this trend has been positive or negative. While there are certainly valid arguments to the contrary, I personally believe that this movement has both sides of good and bad and need to be considered more deeply.
One the bright sides, students have to cope with a plenty of stress and burden when they are in senior high school. Hence, they need to relax themselves after years of hard study, so travelling or working are two of the best options. Besides, only through working, high school guarantees could learn more working experience and marketable skills, which they by no means acquired from their teacher. Moreover, after traveling around the world, they can also broaden their horizons, appreciate natural landscape and even get close to the nature to take a fresh breath.
However, some problems have been identified and need to be accessed. After a period of working or traveling, many students might forget what they have learned from their senior high school and find it difficult to start studying again. Moreover, when students can make money from their hand, some may feel that they could stand alone without further education. In fact, university and college will improve their job prospects as well as offer more opportunity for well-paid jobs and high standard of living. A recently American report has announced that the average salary of university guarantees are higher approximately 25 percent than those who do not have college degree.
To put all in a nutshell, I pen out saying that taking a breaking time period or go straight to the university is a matter of personal preference. From my perspective, students may lose their experience and chance in their life if they do not attend to the university as they can travel or work after graduation.
